A Hand Dyed Wool for Batting and Surface Appliqué

ColorWul (pronounced ColorWool ) is designed to bring a world of color and texture to quilting and appliqué projects.  ColorWul is a hand dyed wool batting useful for a wide variety of textile artistry and subtle quilting applications.  ColorWul is available exclusively at Little Red Quilt House and our fine quilt shop partners.

 

Why did we develop this?

Our studio at Little Red Quilt House is divided in two: one side is our Dye Shop in which we produce our lines of hand dyed fabrics and the other side is our Quilt Shop in which we perform a variety of custom and production quilt finishing services.  We began to take on a number of quilt projects incorporating dark colors like browns, greens, blues and black.  And of course a white batting inside a black quilt results in numerous tufts of white beards as well as an abundance of needling marks.  In each case, the appearance of the finished quilting work was significantly diminished by the use of white or light colored batting.  We began to dye batting to match the surface color of the quilt and two things happened:

 

1) The needle marks disappeared to dramatically improve the overall feel and finish of the project, and

2) The colored batting enhanced the depth of the top fabric colors making for a more brilliant (at one end of the spectrum) or substantial (at the other end) appearance, adding more “life” to the completed piece

 

Our competition quilters were VERY pleased with the result and we thought others would enjoy using this product in their quilting and sewing projects too! And that’s how ColorWul was born.

 

What IS ColorWul?

ColorWul is 60% wool and 40% polyester embedded in a polyester scrim. This combination of fibers gives ColorWul a unique set of characteristics:

 

·        Durable for a lifetime of enjoyment

·        Washable (gentle machine cycle)

·        A soft handle and a medium loft

·        Wonderfully soft and cuddly

·        More body and less bulk for a natural drape

·        Moth proof and anti‑bacterially treated

·        Colorfast – colors won’t bleed or run

·        Heat Retention factor of R 0.2

 

How Can I Use ColorWul?

ColorWul has a wide variety of uses including color trapunto, shadowing and surface appliqué. Anywhere that your project needs a hint of color, texture or loft to bring it to life. Here are some examples:

 

Trapunto – This technique usually involves placing extra batting under a prescribed area of quilt work to raise the surface fabric. When this is done with thin or fragile fabric, the additional stress on the fabric sometimes causes a lightened effect from the stretching. By placing an amount of ColorWul under the area of the Trapunto, the color integrity, and overall appearance, of the surface fabric is maintained.

Shadow Trapunto – When working with a quilt of predominantly light colored fabrics, an artistic flair can be ascribed to the project by a hint of color just below the surface. This shadowing effect adds a subtle amount of color to specific areas of a quilt pattern giving a pastel or gentle suggestion of an image. For this, ColorWul is available in a wide variety of soft and subtle colors to bring forth the most tender of images to the eye. ColorWul can also be used under colored fabrics to change the tint or hue of the top fabric for a more precise or dramatic effect.

Surface Appliqué – is one of the most popular uses for ColorWul. With its texture, loft and over 100 colors, nearly any appliqué project benefits from the attributes of ColorWul.

 

Wonderful To Work With

ColorWul is made from a selection of fine wool fibers and polyester that are combined to deliver a premium product. ColorWul is surprisingly soft and does not beard while quilting like many cottons and polyester batting. In completed projects, the lay of ColorWul offers a natural drape and is never stiff or retains a memory.
